This term is commonly used in Customs, shipping and other such contexts in which currency must be converted for the purposes of computing Customs duty, collection of freight charges, etc. When currency is being directly “exchanged” (i.e., bought or sold for another currency), this term may be used, but such ratios are more commonly referred to as currency “buy” or “sell” rates.
