A tax applied to the "value added" each time raw materials, components or finished goods are imported, sold or resold, with the seller receiving credit back for the VAT the seller paid on the raw materials, components or finished goods at the time the seller purchased and/or imported them. The U.S. does not currently have a VAT tax system, but many other countries do, particularly in Europe.
