Starting January 1, 2024, major carriers MSC and CMA CGM will implement new surcharges for transits through the Panama Canal. This change comes in response to the Panama Canal Authority’s updated booking system to optimize transit operations. Both carriers will charge $40 per TEU for all cargo types on routes from Asia to the US East and Gulf Coasts. Shippers and forwarders should anticipate similar surcharges from other carriers as well.
