Ocean carriers have begun quoting fees associated with the IMO2020 environmental requirements. For most, the effective date was quoted as January 1st; however, we have seen December 1st start dates as well.
Steamship lines have dubbed the fee by different terms, without consistency by carrier alliance. APL and CMA reference low sulphur surcharges, but PIL calls it a low sulphur fuel recovery fee. Maersk and Hamburg Sud call it an environmental fuel fee, and MSC charges a green fuel surcharge. Meanwhile, other carriers are assessing new bunker surcharges, bunker adjustment fees, and fuel recovery surcharges.
Prices vary by carrier and trade lane. As an example of IMO2020-related fees, the low sulphur/environmental fuel charges quoted for Asia and the sub-continent of India to the US and Canada are below.
- US/Canada West Coast: $68-$194 for 20’.
- US/Canada West Coast: $120-$216 for 40’.
- US/Canada East Coast: $128-$317 for 20’.
- US/Canada East Coast: $220-$352 for 40’.
