Director of Customs Affairs & Compliance, Trade Ambassador for CBP’s Trade Support Network, LCB, CCS, & CES
A distinguished authority in the realm of US Customs regulations, Amy Magnus plays an instrumental role in the formation of new policies and procedures, as well as in the dissemination of regulatory information to US importers. Amy frequently presents to national and international audiences at engagements such as the International Compliance Professionals Association’s Annual Conference, C5’s Advanced Forum on Global Customs Compliance, conferences hosted by the American and Canadian Conference Institutes, and Customs and Border Protections’ (CBP’s) ACE Exchange Conferences.
A Licensed Customs broker, Amy is the Director of Customs Affairs and Compliance with oversight of Customs compliance and regulatory matters at Deringer. Additionally, she is the District Manager for one of Deringer’s busiest Customer Service Centers located in Champlain, New York. Amy is a very active member of the Customs community and was appointed to the 14th and 15th terms of the Advisory Committee on Commercial Operations to US Customs and Border Protection (COAC). In this role, she facilitates the dialogue between business and government to ensure international trade challenges are met and overcome.
In addition, she served as Chair of the Board of Directors for the National Customs Brokers and Forwarders Association of America (NCBFAA) and is a former President of the NCBFAA and the Northern Border Customs Brokers Association. In the fall of 2004, CBP selected Amy as one of only 11 Trade Ambassadors to serve on Trade Support Network for the Automated Commercial Environment (ACE). Among the core group of Trade Ambassadors are representatives from General Motors, GE, Trade Point, IBM, Federal Express, and other Fortune 500 companies.
Prior to joining the Deringer team, Amy was a Vice President for a nationally known logistics company that was subsequently purchased by UPS. Before becoming a licensed Customs broker, she worked for CBP for 18 years. When she left Customs, she was the Trade Compliance Manager in the Champlain, New York area service port, the third largest area service port on the Canadian border. Her responsibilities included supervision of all trade-related personnel and functions in Champlain. During her tenure with CBP, Amy worked with various Customs divisions in Washington, DC to draft and implement new policies and procedures as they related to NAFTA, compliance measurements, the Customs Modernization Act, enforcement, and other trade sensitive issues. Prior to her position as Trade Manager, she was the Fines, Penalties, and Forfeiture Officer for over five years, and in her early years with CBP, she served as an Inspector and an Import Specialist. Amy is a graduate of the University of Vermont.
