Following the Canada Industrial Relations Board (CIRB) decision on August 9, ruling that railway services are not legally essential, CN is expediting the strike process, set to begin as early as August 22 at 00:01 ET. To protect operations and stakeholders, CN is implementing an embargo on specific intermodal shipments to ensure a safe and orderly shutdown.
CN Embargoes:
• Effective August 15: Embargo on all temperature-controlled and hazmat intermodal traffic across the network.
• Effective August 16 at 00:01 ET: Embargo on all intermodal traffic destined for Canada from U.S. origins or interchange. U.S.-to-U.S. intermodal shipments will continue as normal.
• These measures ensure safe staging of commodities and rapid resumption of operations post-disruption.
CPKC Intermodal Shipment Management:
• Effective August 15: No acceptance of loaded intermodal shipments classified as dangerous goods at any intermodal facilities for shipments to/from Canada.
• During a potential work stoppage starting August 22 at 00:01, Canadian intermodal terminal gates will remain open as capacity allows.
• Outbound shipments can be ingated until terminals reach capacity; once ingated, shipments won’t be released.
• Fastpass notifications will inform customers when terminals near capacity.
• Private perishable protective service (PPS) equipment and international reefers are excluded from terminals during a work stoppage.
• Inbound shipments to Canadian terminals will follow existing processes; containers at destination terminals can be picked up.
• No over-the-road train service in Canada during a work stoppage.
