The ongoing situation of a potential strike, by approximately 10,000 workers on May 22nd, from Canada’s two major railways has seen a new development. The federal government has asked the Canada Industrial Relations Board to review whether the strike would pose a risk to Canadians’ health and safety, adding a new layer of uncertainty to the situation.
While the potential strike’s timing is uncertain pending safety reviews, its impact on freight rail capacity, both domestic and cross-border, could be substantial. Previous occurrences of similar events have led to freight being redirected from one railway to another. However, the current situation, where both major railways are at risk of striking, could result in significant disruptions to rail shipments within Canada and across borders.
