In a statement posted to Truth Social on January 24, President Trump said that he would pursue a 100% tariff on Canadian goods entering the United States if Canada moves forward with a trade agreement with China.
President Trump commented that the U.S. would not allow Canada to serve as a transshipment point for Chinese products destined for the American market. He stated that any Canadian trade deal with China would result in an immediate 100% tariff on all Canadian goods and products imported into the United States.
In response, the AP is reporting that Canadian Prime Minister Carney stated: “We have no intention of doing that with China or any other nonmarket economy…”
Due to continuing uncertainty regarding tariffs, Deringer recommends our customers and U.S. importers obtain an ACH account for duty payments, as well as ACH refunds. Visit our ACH Resource page to learn how to apply.
We will continue to monitor this situation and provide updates as additional information becomes available.
Due to the rapidly changing application and modifications of duty rates, please note that Deringer is not responsible for coordinating the timing of U.S. entry and imposed tariff rates.
