Reduced shipping activity, and one case of the coronavirus, are impacting US port operations across the country:
Port of Houston
The Barbours Cut and Bayport Terminals at the Port of Houston reopened today following an investigation into a worker who had tested positive for COVID-19 (i.e., the coronavirus). Other workers’ exposure was limited, but those who had direct contact with the person are following the CDC’s self-quarantine guidelines. Terminal equipment, vehicles, and office space were cleaned at the Port.
Ports of Los Angeles & Long Beach
Due to reduced shipping volumes, terminals have suspended operations for some shifts during the week. Additionally, most terminals are no longer operating on Saturdays. Truckers have been experiencing challenges with empty container returns and chassis, and space at the port has become an issue.
Ports of Seattle & Tacoma
The ports of Seattle and Tacoma are operational, but since March 6th, Seattle’s Terminal 18 has been closed on Fridays due to low container volumes. The schedule for Terminal 18 is being evaluated each week.
Port of Miami
Due to low import container volumes, two terminals at the Port of Miami—the South Florida Container Terminal (SFCT) and Port of Miami Terminal Operating Co. (POMTOC)—have scheduled temporary closures. SFCT will be closed today, and POMTOC will be closed on Monday and Tuesday of next week.
