According to an announcement made on May 31st, India will no longer be a beneficiary developing country of the Generalized System of Preferences (GSP) program effective June 5th. President Trump determined that India has not assured the United States that “it will provide equitable and reasonable access to its markets and basic commodity resources of such country and the extent to which such country has assured the United States that it will refrain from engaging in unreasonable export practices.” Without GSP eligibility, India will be subject to safeguard duties on solar cells and washing machines.
The Congress and India were initially notified of the intent to terminate India’s designation on March 4, 2019. If you have specific questions regarding your shipments, please contact Deringer’s Compliance Department.
